Chris Pallister; talking in class to talking on the radio. Pallister is the radio host for 107.3 Virgin Radio in Victoria BC. Pallister’s love for talking not only gave him the first-ever and only detention at Camosun College in Victoria BC, but it also gave him his dream career; “I talk for a living, and I love to talk” says Pallister. As a Camosun Alumnus, Chris Pallister was invited back to Camosun by Communication Department head, Lois Fernyhough. Pallister met with DIPR and DigCom students to tell them about his experiences in the communications field, and how he found his career through Camosun College’s resources.

Camosun College has always prepared students for life after graduation. Pallister recalls a memory of walking to the admissions building when seeing a pamphlet made for ACP (Applied Communication Program). This Pamphlet was for job opportunities for the ACP students and contained a small but mighty job opportunity for Pallister. The gig consisted of one shift a month; the selected candidate could talk on air for 3 hours on the Village 900 radio station. Although this may not seem like much, Pallister recommends never saying no to opportunities no matter how small or insignificant they may seem. With his love for talking, Pallister took the gig, and his dream career began.

Throughout the years Pallister has travelled all over Canada, talking on different radio stations, networking with his peers, and getting his name out to the country. With every new city came a unique opportunity.  With growing a name for himself, he also had to reinvent himself often. He stressed to the DIPR and DigCom students to always be yourself and to always look for the opportunity to grow, to take the chances that might seem pointless. Being from Victoria BC, when the opportunity came up for him to move back, he accepted with no hesitation. His dream career and all of his small gigs have finally added up to a dream career just in time to raise his young family in the city he grew up.

With his drive to always self-improve, Pallister compares his radio experiences with writing a book; What’s the hook? What is going to bring people in when the digital world is pulling your audience’s attention in 50 different directions?  Pallister’s hook is his love for talking and passion for giving Victoria a small town-Big city local broadcast every morning from 5:00 am to 10:00 am only on 107.3 Virgin Radio, Victoria BC.
