Con: Free College Tuition

Con: Free College Tuition                                    Diebold                                                April 03, 2020

When it comes to the free tuition debate, there are many pros and cons to be hashed out. When there is a pro, there is always a con to follow. Education should be accessible for everyone, and having free tuition may sound like the answer, but it only leads to more problems in the educational system. Free tuition isn’t the answer to accessible education, but the idea does open up the arguments to creating a way for education to be more accessible. Missy Furman wrote in the Technician, that “College is a privilege, not a right”. I will be arguing how College is a right and how free tuition only hinders the opportunity for post-secondary education to the lower classes. According to an article by Allison, free tuition only hurt the poorer students more. Free tuition is not the answer to making college an equal opportunity for all social classes.

But free tuition sounds great, no student loans! Wrong, student loans will then be condensed and limited to help students cover the cost of living. Paid tuition is ultimately better for students because the student loans accommodate for the cost of living and allow the students to be able to be financially stable during their education. Higher education is a right just as basic human needs are. Many full-time students do not have the time for a part-time to supplement their income to pay rent, pay for groceries or afford necessities as they need them. Student loans are given upon estimate of educational costs, needs of the student; disabilities, housing, food, textbooks, school supplies, and even extra money for personal items. Without tuition, the cost of living for a student is no longer covered or stable. The cost of living without tuition is challenging to achieve without student loans as the cost of living in Victoria is still sky-high with the average rental being around $1200 a month for a one-bedroom.

If college tuition were free, the educational system would begin to overflow with new opportunities, regardless of social class. The system then becomes diluted, causing backlash. This may sound like it is a great idea, but it is really the deterioration of equality in education.
Free tuition is not the answer to education inequality, by covering the costs of tuition, the college and university classes will also be filled with middle- and upper-class students, causing the availability to the lower-class to plummet.

Another critical question to ask is; If students are not paying for their tuition, who is? The money has to come from somewhere. “The point is, all we know is that someone will pay these dues through taxes” (collegeraptor.com). Although this is an American source, it has a point. If BC were to provide Free Tuition, it would change the way funding is distributed in the province and may affect more than just students. The government should be focused on making not only education more accessible but creating financing for housing for students that do not necessarily have access to dorms. Education needs to be accessible to all, not just those that can afford a lifestyle outside the classroom.
